I heard this song by Phillips, Craig & Dean and read the story behind the song and thought this story and song would bring comfort to all of us who are hurting and to give us hope for the future.
Pastors come in all shapes and sizes and their temperaments are all different and this pastor is high adrenaline type A, jumping out of airplanes, bungee jumping, motorcycle riding and all that. He talked to one of his members, a surgeon, to allow him to be in the room during open-heart surgery. That’s amazing!
He is standing in the corner and they bring the patient in. They do this amazing thing where they saw open the chest, open the chest cavity, extract the heart and then the surgeon does the treatment on the heart, fixes the heart, puts the heart back in the chest cavity, and gently messages it.
But this time, the heart did not start up on its own. So he massaged it again. Still, nothing happened. Then, it dawned on the pastor, I may be about to see this surgeon lose this patient. They did a little more treatment on the heart, which was a little more extreme to get the heart going and still nothing.
Finally, the surgeon knelt down beside his patient, took off his surgeons’ mask, and said, “Mr. Johnson, this is your surgeon. The operation went perfectly. Your heart is repaired and now you need to tell your heart to beat again.” When he said that, the heart began to beat again.
When I heard that story, I thought, I have got to write this song, because there are so many people who have experienced so much brokenness to their heart that even though God, The Great Surgeon, saved us, repaired us, covered us with His grace, sometimes we have to tell our own heart to beat again, love again, hope again. So, to anyone who has had a broken heart or has a wounded heart, The Surgeon tells you to tell your heart to beat again.
